The 1983 Iron Bowl was decided on December 3 at Legion Field. Auburn won 23-20.

The game would be Ray Perkins' first Iron Bowl after being hand picked to succeed Bear Bryant, and marred an otherwise respectable 8-4 season. It was Pat Dye's second consecutive Iron Bowl win, leading the 11-1 Tigers to an SEC championship, a win in the Sugar Bowl, and a 3rd place ranking nationally.

The game began under sunny skies, but with 10 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, a tornado warning for Jefferson County was issued. The National Weather Service's Oxmoor Road offices recorded 9.22 inches of rain. The game was not stopped despite the amount of rain coming down. Bo Jackson, with 256 yards rushing, and kicker Al Del Greco led the Tigers to victory. The storm system later spawned an F-3 tornado which destroyed a Winn-Dixie supermarket in Oxford.
