The 2009 East Lake plane crash was a minor aviation accident that occurred in a field adjacent to the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport on December 8, 2009. The single-engine plane was registered to the Staples Investment Group and was en route from Atlanta to the Shelby County Airport during a windstorm. The flight was rerouted first to the Bessemer Airport and then to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International due to unsafe landing conditions. The aircraft ran out of fuel before it was able to land on a runway and made a "soft landing" in the adjacent field, owned by the Birmingham Airport Authority. The unidentified pilot was the only person on the plane and was uninjured.
