The inaugural AVP Hoover Open beach volleyball tournament was held at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium on July 13-16, 2006. The three-day Crocs Tour tournament, presented by Coca-Cola's Vault beverages, was the first professional beach volleyball tournament to be held in Alabama. The competition finals were televised by Fox Sports Network. Birmingham's Bruno Event Team helped organize the tour event.

In preparation for the event, the Hoover Parks and Recreation Department constructed a 106' x 70' sand-filled platform in the stadium's infield, and laid out seven other sand courts in the parking lot, using more than 4,000 tons of sand. The main stage's structural design was the work of Rayford F. Smith of SSL&J Building.
