Angela Hernández

Angela Fleites Hernández (born c. 1926 in San Manuel, Cuba - died April 5, 2009) was chair of the math department at the University of Montevallo.

Hernández, a doctor of math and physics, fled Cuba with her husband, an accountant, and their three daughters on October 1, 1961. She found a job at Alabama College and taught there for 30 years before retiring in 1991 as chair of her department.

Hernández won an award for "outstanding commitment to teaching" in 1984.

Hernández also founded the university's chapter of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. Their chapter room is named in her honor.

Hernández died in 2009 of complications from heart surgery. She was survived by her three daughters, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her funeral services were held at St Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Hoover. She is interred at Southern Heritage Cemetery.
