David McKinney
David Tarell McKinney (born c. 1983 in Alexander City) is a speech professor at Jefferson State Community College and a candidate for Birmingham Board of Education District 5 in the 2017 and 2021 Birmingham municipal elections.
McKinney earned a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism at Troy University, a master's in communication management at UAB, and an Educational Specialist degree in instructional technology at the University of Alabama in 2014. He is currently working toward a PhD in educational leadership at the University of Alabama.
He worked as a production assistant for WBRC-TV from 2006 to 2009 and began his teaching career at Miles College in 2008. He has also taught at Jefferson State Community College, UAB and Alabama.
McKinney lost in a runoff to Mickey Millsap for a Birmingham Board of Education seat in 2017. He ran again for the open District 5 seat in 2021. As a candidate, McKinney has advocated a culturally relevant curriculum and promoting reading skills, as well as a mentorship program to help develop and retain faculty.
