Greg Gantt

Lewis Gregory Gantt (born c. 1952 in Birmingham; died October 26, 2011 in Birmingham was a punter for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team from 1971 to 1973 and in the NFL. He holds the team record for punting average, but is most remembered for two blocked punts that were returned for touchdowns in the 1972 Iron Bowl at Legion Field.

Gantt, the son of Lewis Whaley and Joyce Riley Gantt of Birmingham, graduated from Woodlawn High School. After college he signed with the New York Jets. When he retired from the NFL he returned to Birmingham to launch a recycling business.

Gantt died in 2011 after a lengthy battle with diabetes and heart disease. He was survived his ex-wife and two daughters, and by two sisters. He is buried at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham.
