Kirani James

Kirani James (born September 1, 1992 in Gouyave, Grenada) is a former Alabama Crimson Tide track and field star, and an Olympic gold medalist.

James excelled as a competitive runner from a young age. He set a world record for a 15-year-old in the 200 meter sprint in 2008 and was awarded the Austin Sealy Trophy as best overall athlete in the 2009 CARIFTA games. He was also named Grenada Sportsman of the Year for 2009.

Heavily recruited to American universities, James accepted a scholarship offer from Alabama. He competed for the Tide in 2010 and 2011, and promptly broke Cori Loving's school record in the 400-meter sprint. After the 2011 season, James departed to become a professional runner, with an eye toward the 2012 Olympics. He won Grenada's first-ever gold medal in the Mens' 400-meter sprint at the Games in London.
