According to a Facebook post by Bill Grant his grandfather, also named Bill Grant, a sculptor who migrated from Edinburgh , Scotland. Carved the lions from limestone quarried at East Thomas. The WPA publication ''Alabama: A Guide to the Deep South'' (Alabama State Planning Commission, 1941) states that "William Grant, a native of New York but a resident of Birmingham, designed and executed the Alabama War Memorial at the entrance of Birmingham's Legion Field."
