Shades Valley is the valley running from northeast to southwest, bound by the continuous southern slope of Red Mountain and the continuous northern slope of Shades Mountain. Shades Creek runs southwest through the bottom of the valley. The cities of Homewood, Mountain Brook, and Irondale are all located primarily within Shades Valley.

The floor of Shades Valley is lower than that of neighboring Jones Valley, but it contains a small ridge, its peak approximately 200 feet lower than the mountains on either side, just north of Shades Creek..
