The UAB Gurney Derby is a homecoming tradition held at UAB since 1994. The event, which is organized by the UAB National Alumni Society, pits various departments and campus organizations against each other in a race to push a hospital gurney along a pre-defined course.
Each team is comprised of two men and two women. The gurneys themselves are pulled out of UAB Hospital storage and are distributed to teams on a first-come, first-served basis.
Prizes are awarded to the fastest team, the best-decorated gurney, the most entertaining "patient" (usually a doll), and to the slowest group to cross the finish line.
