In February 2017 the City of Birmingham reported 205,831 jobs in the city, of which 113,323 (55%) were located in the 15 square mile "urban core" centered on downtown.
- 26,828 jobs (13.0%) were retail positions.
- 15,133 jobs (7.4%) were in the finance, insurance and real estate sector.
- 13,000+ jobs (6.4%) were in government service.
- 10,712 jobs (5.2%) were in the manufacturing sector.
The city's (and state's) largest employer is UAB, accounting for approximately 23,000 (20.3%) of the city's jobs.
