Wylam Oaks is a residential subdivision developed in 2008 by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Birmingham on a site fronting Lexington Street to either side of 8th Avenue in Wylam.
The site, a former storage yard for a railroad maintenance facility, was donated by U. S. Steel. Ground was broken on September 26, 2007 with infrastructure work provided by the City of Birmingham. It was the largest single development undertaken by the Birmingham Habitat group.
The first phase of construction, providing 38 new houses, began on September 12, 2008. Another 17 lots were available for future construction on the site. U. S. Steel employees and United Steelworkers members volunteered their time for one of the homes. Other companies sending labor included J. R.
