Jefferson County voting precincts are geographical subdivisions created for the purpose of organizing elections in Jefferson County. A precinct, also formerly called a "beat", usually corresponds to a polling place, but in the past some precincts have had more than one polling location, and some polling places may serve more than one precinct.
Precinct boundaries are changed as needed to facilitate elections by the Jefferson County Board of Registrars under the authority of the Jefferson County Probate Court. They can be split or merged to reflect changes in the number of registered voters in an area, or simply moved due to a change in the availability of a polling place.
The only elected office corresponding to the precinct level is that of Jefferson County Constable. In 2009 the City of Birmingham unified their municipal polling places with the county's precincts.
