Thomas P. Dooley (born in Atchison, Kansas) is chief scientific officer for Mediquest Therapeutics of Bothell, Washington, a Christian minister and author, and was a Republican candidate for Alabama State Board of Education, District 4 in the 2010 general election.
Dooley was raised on a farm near Atchison. He has a bachelor of science from the University of Kansas and a PhD in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology from Indiana University. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship with the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London, England. As a research scientist working for the Upjohn Company, he was involved in the development and testing of Rogaine/Minoxidil and other treatments.
Dooley worked as a research scientist at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research and taught at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio from 1991 to 1995. He held the Alabama Power Company endowed chair as Director of Molecular Pharmacology at Southern Research Institute and taught as an adjunct assistant professor at UAB from 1995 to 1998.
Dooley and Jim Hudson, cofounded ALtruis LLC, which provides online marketing and other services to medical and biomedical clients, and the dermatology research firm IntegriDerm. Dooley served as CEO of IntegriDerm from 1998 until it was acquired by MediQuest in 2004. He currently serves as MediQuest's chief scientific officer.
Dooley founded the Biotechnology Association of Alabama, but resigned over its support for human cloning. He has testified in support of legal bans against human cloning and human stem-cell research before the United States Senate.
In 2004 Dooley founded Path Clearer, a ministry aiming to "foster apostolic-prophetic leadership for the establishment and nurturing of various components of the Kingdom of God among the nations." The non-profit organization has served as publisher of his three books. Dooley is also a frequent guest of Don L. Hawkins on his "Life Perspectives Radio" program.
Dooley ran unopposed in the 2010 Republican primary for the District 4 seat left vacant by the retirement of six-term incumbent Ethel Hall. Identifying "fatherlessness" as a root cause for educational and economic disparities in Alabama, he planned to promote a mentoring program for elementary school students. He also supported the expansion of the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative and the Alabama Reading Initiative. He lost to Yvette Richardson in the general election. Dooley and his wife, Laura, have four children; Isaac, Catherine, Jeannette, and Thomas S.
