Simon Speights is the mayor of Lipscomb. He ran unopposed in the 2004 election for Lipscomb City Council and was selected by the council to succeed Jimmie Johnson when he resigned the mayor's office in 2005.

In June 2007 it was reported that a car Speights has driven was one that had previously been reported stolen and was abandoned and impounded in the city. It was soon later revealed that Speights had pleaded guilty to felony burglary in Birmingham on February 3, 1994. Though his right to vote was restored in 2004, he may not have been qualified to run for elected office. The matter is being investigated by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Meanwhile some residents of Lipscomb have petitioned Speights to step down as mayor. He has said that he will wait until an Attorney General's ruling on his qualifications for the 2004 election.
