• Melissa Buckner was stabbed to death during a robbery. James Clark Jr was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. He died at the William Donaldson Correctional Facility in 2024. (report)

Homewood

• March 9: Toni Maria Lim, 23, found bound in her apartment at Raleigh Villas with her throat slit and evidence of rape. Lim was a married student who performed at Sammy's Go-Go. Steven Alan Petric was charged with capital murder in 2004 after being jailed for armed robbery in Illinois. A national database matched his DNA to a sample taken from Lim's apartment. He was convicted in August 2009 and sentenced to death. Petric appealed on the basis of ineffective representation, and was granted a new trial. In 2024 he pleaded guilty to intentional murder before Judge Michael Streety and was sentenced to 28 years in prison. He was credited with time served since his official arrest in 2007. (report)

Unincorporated Jefferson County

• January 12: Bill Donaldson, a correctional officer, was stabbed to death while working at the West Jefferson Correctional Facility. The prison was renamed in his memory the following year. [1]
