The Peoples Bank and Trust Company was a Selma-based bank with two offices in Shelby County. People's entered the market in 1998 with the acquisition of Merchants and Planters Bank of Montevallo. It opened a branch in Helena during 2000. It is an affiliate of The Peoples BancTrust Company, Inc. Founded in the Dallas County town in 1902, it has grown to become the 12th largest bank in Alabama, with 24 offices located in 10 Alabama counties and employing approximately 300 people. On October 15, 2007, Peoples was acquired by Mobile-based BankTrust. The banks will combine operations in 2008.
