2009

• The In-Town Transit Partnership applied for federal funding for a downtown bus system with connectors to various Birmingham neighborhoods.

2007

• Commuter rail on existing CSX trackage between Birmingham and Ross Bridge was studied by Hoover Mayor Tony Petelos in 2007, but CSX would not agree to share the track and building a new route would cost up to $600 million.
• Birmingham mayor Larry Langford's Birmingham Economic and Community Revitalization Ordinance included earmarks for improvements to the existing Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority as well as for Heritage streetcars to run along 18th Street North.

1998

• The Birmingham Area Regional Transit Authority proposed a light rail network in the region. As initially planned the system's first phase would be a 13.5 mile line paralleling I-20/59 through downtown budgeted at $340 million. A total of $87.5 million in matching federal funds was secured by Senator Richard Shelby. Funding to begin work was included in the MAPS referendum which was defeated by Jefferson County voters in 1998.

Earlier

• Birmingham City Council-member John Katopodis once proposed a monorail connecting Vulcan Park to the Birmingham Zoo.
