Deborah Thomas is a corrections officer employed at the Birmingham City Jail. On December 7, 2005 she found a prisoner hanging in his cell from an improvised rope. She called for help and held the man up until he could be rescued.
For this action, Thomas was named "Officer of the Year" by the Echange Club of Birmingham on July 27, 2006.
