Wingscapes, Inc. is an Alabaster-based division of EBSCO Industries which manufactures and sells outdoor motion-activated and time-lapse camera systems. The product was developed by Bart Stephens, product manager and grandson of Elton B. Stephens, in collaboration with Global Point Products, EBSCO's Rochester, New York camera manufacturer, and PRADCO Engineering, EBSCO's plastics and injection molding division.
Wingscapes' "BirdCam" line uses infrared motion sensing to trigger the camera when birds are active in its field of view. Its "PlantCam" and "ProjectCam" products are aimed at gardeners and builders to automate the creation of time-lapse movies documenting long projects. The first BirdCam product was launched in 2006. The company shares space with EBSCO's Moultrie Feeders at 150 Industrial Road in Alabaster.
Wingscapes sells their cameras and accessories through their website. They are also available in the area at Brookstone, Leaf & Petal, Little Hardware, Myers Plants & Pottery, Sweet Peas, and Wild Birds Unlimited.
In 2011 the company held a "Cameras for Classrooms" essay contest and shipped 50 cameras to winning schools for use in educational projects. Area winners included Auburn University Science in Motion, Lake View Elementary School in McCalla, and Gardendale Elementary School.
