A native of Birmingham, Brake attended Minor High School, Birmingham-Southern College (Bachelor of Music in clarinet performance), the University of Alabama (Master of Music in clarinet performance) and the University of Alabama School of Law.
While at Minor High School, Brake performed in musicals and studied informally with noted music educator Ray Reach. Later, while attending Birmingham-Southern College, Gaines again studied with Reach, studying jazz as his Interim Term project.
Brake regularly performs with notable Alabama jazz groups, such as the Night Flight Big Band, the Joe Giattina Orchestra and Ray Reach and Friends. In addition, he regularly performs for jazz concerts sponsored by Bob Taylor's jazz ministry at Christ Church United Methodist in Pelham.
