Herman R. Frazier (born October 29, 1954 was named the 2nd Director of Athletics at UAB on August 22, 2000.
Prior to UAB
As a member of the US National Track & Field team, Frazier participated both in the Olympic and Pan-American games. In the 1976 Montreal Olympics, he ran the first leg for the gold medal-winning 4x400-meter relay team. Individually, he won a bronze medal in the 400-meter dash. He was also a gold medalist at both the 1975 and 1979 Pan-American Games. In 1980, he was a member of the U.S. Olympic team that boycotted the Olympic Games in Moscow.
Frazier began his athletics administration career immediately upon graduation as a graduate assistant with the Arizona State University track & field program in 1977. His tenure at the school spanned 23 years, culminating as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Business Operations.
At UAB
His most notable accomplishments on the Southside during his 22 month tenure as Athletics Director were laying the groundwork for a $30 million facilities improvement plan and hirirng Mike Anderson as the school's 3rd Head Men's Basketball Coach.
Frazier resigned his position on June 21, 2002 to become Athletics Director at the University of Hawai'i.
After UAB
Since leaving Birmingham, Frazier served Hawai'i as AD from 2002 to 2008. He later served as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Sports Administration at Temple University and currently is Senior Deputy Director of Athletics at Syracuse University.
In 2012, he received the NACDA Pioneer Award for his position as Chef de Mission for the 2004 Olympic Games.
