The Kaleidoscope, or K-Scope, is the student newspaper for UAB. It was founded in 1967 by editor Patrick Cather. Assistant editor Melissa Hidle suggested the name of the publication, which was a play of the Birmingham Extension Center's defunct Centerscope newsletter. The first issue of The Kaleidoscope was dated October 26 of that year. The monthly newspaper was transitioned into a bi-weekly in 1968 as interest and advertising sales picked up.
As the university added a Department of Communication Studies and a UAB Student Media office, more and more students have been involved in creating The Kaleidoscope.
Since then, the paper has transitioned into a coordinated print and online news service. The current editor-in-chief is Chandler Jones.
