Cathey grew up in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. As a teenager he made and sold sharktooth necklaces which were sold at beachfront souvenir stands. He apprenticed as a gold and silversmith with Jay Lubeck through high school. He interviewed with a Birmingham-based jewelry manufacturer, but then decided to open his own studio in 1981 in the Signature House at 1312 Cobb Lane. The business grew slowly into Stuart Cathey Goldsmything, expanding into more space on the house's upper floor.
