3rd Avenue West is a major east-west street running through western Birmingham, from center Street to Border Street, where it becomes Bessemer Road (though some addresses still refer to 3rd Avenue West in Ensley and Central Park)

The route is part of U.S. Highway 11 and also part of U.S. Highway 78. As a major connection to Ensley and Bessemer, 3rd Avenue was used by the No. 5 Ensley-Fairfield streetcar line, and its successor, the MAX Transit Route 5.

Until reaching Arkadelphia Road/Princeton Parkway, the street parallels Valley Creek.
