Nairi (born December 13, 2011) is a female orangutan at the Birmingham Zoo. She is the first-born offspring of Lipz and her mate, Oliver, and was delivered by caesarean section.
Nairi's name was chosen in a contest sponsored by the zoo. 5-year old Evan Lucia of Shelby County submitted the winning entry. The name means "kind one" in Indonesia, and also "sounded cool" to Evan. Proceeds from the contest's $2 entry fee went to Orangutan Outreach.
