Jim Pate is a retired librarian, having worked at the Birmingham Public Library for many years. He is also a part time legal assistant and researcher.
Pate's hobbies include competing in official Scrabble crossword game tournaments, making boomerangs, and constructing and playing Caribbean steel drums. He was the Alabama State Scrabble Champion in 2002. He also served on the Dictionary Committee of the North American Scrabble Players Association for many years and acted as the committee's chair from 2009 to 2014.
Pate identifies himself as a Christian.
