Employment in Birmingham is a primary issue.

In 2017 the City of Birmingham reported 205,831 jobs in the city, of which 113,323 (55%) were located in the 15 square mile "urban core" centered on downtown.

  • 15,133 jobs (7.4%) were in the finance, insurance and real estate sector.
  • 13,000+ jobs (6.4%) were in government service.

The city's largest employer is UAB, accounting for approximately 23,000 (20.3%) of the city's jobs.
