Acme Theatres Inc. was a holding company formed in 1933 by Sallie Wise and Frank Merritt to own the properties on which their chain of movie theaters operated.
It was a successor to the former Wise Theatres company, co-founded by Sallie's husband, Marvin) and Merritt's Magic Amusement Co. It existed simultaneously with Galax Theatres, the company which operated the cinema houses. The company was dissolved in 1937.
These related companies were sometimes referred to as the Wise interests or the Merritt interests.
Acme Theatres operated the following cinemas:
- Empire Theatre (bought 1935)
- Galax Theatre (closed 1964)
- Lyric Theatre (leased 1950, closed 1958)
- Melba Theatre (opened 1946)
- Royal Theatre (bought 1920s, closed 1951)
- Strand Theatre (closed 1953)
- Woodlawn Theatre (bought 1920s)
