Race for the Cure
The Komen Birmingham Race for the Cure is part of an international series of 5K road races held annually to raise awareness of and funds for Susan G. Komen For The Cure, a national non-profit organization which supports research and outreach efforts in the fight against breast cancer. The local event has been run since 1991. 75% of the funds raised locally, which totaled over $400,000 in 2005, are distributed in the area. The local presenting sponsor is WBRC 6.
Until 2020 the Susan G. Komen North Central Alabama affiliate sponsored the Birmingham race. That year the national organization consolidated operations at its Dallas, Texas headquarters.
