The karate competition at the 2022 World Games took place on July 8 and July 9 in the Bill Battle Coliseum at Birmingham-Southern College. Karate has been an event since the inaugural 1981 World Games in Santa Clara, California, and the Birmingham edition marked the eleventh time karate was included as a regular event at the World Games. Karat is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom of present-day Japan under the influence of Chinese martial arts, particularly Fujian White Crane. Karate is now predominantly a striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes, and open-hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear-hands and palm-heel strikes. Historically, and in some modern styles, grappling, throws, joint locks, restraints and vital-point strikes are also taught.
