The 2006 Rickwood Classic was the 11th in the annual series of "throwback" games played by the Birmingham Barons in vintage-style uniforms at Birmingham's historic Rickwood Field. The Barons won 3-2 against the Tennessee Smokies on a hazy June 22 with high temperatures near 100°. Corey Smith's winning run was driven in by a Thomas Collaro sacrifice fly off reliever Matt Wilkinson.

The Barons honored their brief (1953-56) association with the New York Yankees, wearing white uniforms with navy blue pinstripes and blue caps. The first 1,500 fans received a Rick Woodward bobblehead. The game was presented by State Farm Insurance. Tickets were $9 for general admission.

The announced crowd for the Thursday mid-day game was 4,704, the second smallest. Special guests included pitcher Tommy John, and Barons Hall of Fame inductee Rondal Rollin.

During the game, the 2006 class of the newly-created Birmingham Barons Hall of Fame was announced. The inductees were Art Clarkson (owner 1981-90), Terry Francona (manager 1993-95), Wayne Martin (sportswriter), and Randal Rollin (outfield, 1982 & 1985-87)
