Alabama State House of Representatives, District 56 includes several communities in Western Jefferson County including Lipscomb, North Johns, most of Bessemer, parts of Birmingham's Brownville community, small sections of Brighton, Hoover and Hueytown, and many unincorporated areas.

District 56 was most recently represented by Priscilla Dunn, who was elected to the seat in 1998 and vacated it when she won a special election for the Alabama Senate District 19 seat left vacant by the criminal conviction of E. B. McClain.

2009 election

Candidates for the seat in the September 29, 2009 special election include Louise Alexander, Lawrence McAdory, Claire Mitchell and Margie Varner, all running as Democrats. A runoff, if needed, is scheduled for November 10.
