Alton is an unincorporated community in Jefferson County, 14 miles to the northeast of downtown Birmingham. It adjoins Trussville to the northeast Birmingham to the southwest, Irondale to the south and is traversed by Queenstown Road and Alton Road.
Alton is primarily residential with commercial establishments clustered at the Queenstown Road and Alton Road intersection. Residents are served by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and the Jefferson County School System. Additionally the Alton Post Office is located at 5555 Johnson Street serving the 35015 zip code.
