The Bessemer Police Department serves the City of Bessemer, west of Birmingham, with a population of approximately 26,500. The department is located at 23 15th Street North. The department consists of 115 sworn officers and 40 professional staff members. The Chief of Police is Mike Roper.
The Bessemer Police Department is organized into twelve divisions, including the Patrol Division, Jail Division, Traffic Motor Scouts, Criminal Investigation Division, Administrative Division, Training Division, Special Operations Division, Community Service/Crime Prevention Division, Environmental Unit, Special Response Team, Parking Enforcement, and Internal Affairs Division
