Bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla), also called French hydrangea, is a flowering shrub native to Japan and Korea and popular as an ornamental plant. The plant is distinguished by large, pebble-surfaced serrate leaves with arcuate veins. The long-lasting blossoms, clustered into large pom-pom shaped groupings in the most popular cultivars, vary from white to blue or pink. Purple or blue petals are often an indication of acidic soils (rich in aluminum ions) and pink of basic soils.
