Cardiff (incorporated in 1900) is a town of 81 people on 0.2 square miles just west of Brookside in northwest Jefferson County. Named after the mining town in Wales, the community grew up around the Cardiff mine, which was operated by Sloss Iron & Steel Company. A post office (35041) was established there in 1890. The ZIP Code still applies but since the Five Mile Creek flood the mail for Cardiff has been delivered through the Brookside Post Office. The town had a volunteer fire department for most of its history, but dismantled it and turned over fire protection duties to Brookside Fire Department after the town could no longer afford it. There was also a police department with one or two officers for a short while, with the city jail rented from a resident.
