The Civil Rights Movement refers to the reform movements in the United States aimed at abolishing racial discrimination of African Americans. Birmingham was one of the focal points of these movements, culminating in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's (SCLC) Birmingham campaign in spring 1963.
