David Russell
David Aaron "Mississippi Town" Russell (born c. 1951) is an insurance agent and frequent political candidate.
Russell has a bachelor's degree in business administration and economics from Alabama State University. He worked at his alma mater as an administrator for 15 years.
Russell's first political campaign was an unsuccessful run for the Alabama Public Service Commission in 1982. He also ran unsuccessfully for the City Council District 9 position in 2001, 2005, 2009, and 2013, losing to Roderick Royal all four times, and for Alabama House District 60 in 2002, 2006, and 2010, losing to Linda Coleman, Earl Hilliard Jr, and Juandalynn Givan.
As a 2009 City Council candidate, Russell ran on a platform of improving public safety, increasing community involvement, addressing environmental issues, and improving education. He ran again for the District 9 seat in the 2013 Birmingham municipal election. In 2017 he listed his priorities as reducing sewer and water bills, reducing crime, reopening Cooper Green Hospital and Council Elementary School and opening a seniors and veterans center.
Russell was formerly married to State Representative and State Senator Sundra Escott and has one son, David Jr.
