Delores Robinson

Delores Marie Robinson (born c. 1972) is a geophysicist, professor and department chair of the University of Alabama's Department of Geological Sciences. She investigates the early formation of mountain ranges, with a particular focus on Western Nepal, India, Bhutan and Southern Tibet.

Robinson earned a bachelor's degree in geology at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1994. She completed a research project on the gravity and magnetics of diabase dikes in Jamestown, North Carolina. She earned a master's degree at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee in 1997, researching magma chamber dynamics in Aztec Wash pluton. She then enrolled as a doctoral student at the University of Arizona, researching the kinematic history, structure and stratigraphy of Western Nepal and producing a new geological map of the region. She was awarded her Ph.D. in 2001.

Robinson began her professional career as a structural geologist for BP in Alaska. She was appointed to the faculty of the University of Alabama as an assistant professor in 2003. She was promoted to associate professor in 2010, to graduate program director in 2012, and to full professor and chair of geological sciences in 2016. Her continuing research into the tectonics of the Himalayas, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, has involved traversing the region on foot to collect rock samples to analyze alongside seismic data.

Robinson has authored or co-authored numerous scientific papers. She has also served as editor of The Dynamic Earth Laboratory Manual, revised annually. In 2018 Robinson was elected as a Fellow of the Geological Society of America. She is married and has four children.
