The Downtown Club of Birmingham was founded in 1947 with Newman Waters, Sr as its first president.

The club moved into a new building adjoining the Essex House in 1966. It was the location of the first organizing meetings of the Birmingham Large Users Group in 1983. Both buildings were demolished in 1997 for the construction of Energen Plaza.
