The Downtown Club of Birmingham was founded in 1947 with Newman Waters, Sr as its first president.

The club moved into a new building, constructed by Brice Building Company, in 1966.

The club was the location of the first organizing meetings of the Birmingham Large Users Group in 1983

The building was demolished in 1997, along with the adjacent Essex House, for the construction of Energen Plaza.
