East Lake is a former municipality, developed as a streetcar suburb in 1887 by the East Lake Land Company in the vicinity of East Lake Park and the old community of Ruhama.
It was incorporated with its own Mayor and Board of Aldermen in 1900. The City of East Lake was annexed into Birmingham on January 1, 1910 as part of the Greater Birmingham annexation campaign. It is presently the East Lake community, one of 23 districts organized under the "Community Participation Program".
