East Lake is one of 23 "communities" in Birmingham's "Community Participation Program". It includes the neighborhoods of Brown Springs, Gate City, North East Lake, Wauhoma, Zion City and the East Lake neighborhood.

The East Lake community is located north of the Woodlawn, east of the Crestwood, south of the Roebuck-South East Lake, and west of the Huffman communities along 1st Avenue North and Interstate 59, and includes East Lake Park, the former resort and amusement park which was the centerpiece for the residential development efforts of the East Lake Land Company.
