Gaines B. Brake is a clarinetist, saxophonist and attorney residing in Tuscaloosa. A native of Birmingham, Brake attended Minor High School, Birmingham-Southern College (Bachelor of Music in clarinet performance), the University of Alabama (Master of Music in clarinet performance) and the University of Alabama School of Law.

While at Minor High School, Brake performed in musicals and studied informally with noted music educator Ray Reach. Later, while attending Birmingham-Southern College, Gaines again studied with Reach, studying jazz as his Interim Term project.
