Garrick McGee

Garrick McGee (born April 6, 1973 in Tulsa, Oklahoma) is the head coach of the UAB Blazers football team, having been hired to succeed Neil Callaway after the 2011 season.

McGee, son of Larry and Saundra McGee, grew up in Tulsa where his father was the well-known head football coach of Booker T. Washington High School. He played quarterback for his father there and went on to sign a scholarship to play for Bobby Petrino at Arizona State University in 1991. His time there was marred by a burglary arrest. He pleaded guilty to his part in a string of incidents and was sentenced to pay restitution and serve three years on probation.

McGee left Arizona State and played at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in 1993, then transferred to the University of Oklahoma in 1994, where he played for offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Watson Brown. In two seasons with the Sooners, McGee threw for 2,449 yards, fourth on OU's career passing list. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1996.

In 1996 McGee was hired as an assistant coach at Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma. In 1999 he moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa to coach the Northern Iowa Panthers wide receivers. He worked in the NFL on the Jacksonville Jaguars' staff under his former ASU coach Bobby Petrino in 2000, then returned to college football, with wide receivers coaching positions at the University of Toledo, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, and Northwestern University. He was promoted to offensive coordinator at Northwestern in 2006. On December 24 of that year, he was arrested for misdemeanor driving under the influence in Tulsa. He pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was fined and sentenced to 24 hours of community service.

In 2008 McGee accepted the job of quarterbacks coach at the University of Arkansas, again working for Petrino. He was promoted to offensive coordinator there in 2010 and helped the Razorbacks put up a 10-3 record. He turned down the head coaching job at the University of Tulsa in January 2011 and helped Arkansas achieve a #3 national ranking during the 2011 season, for which he was named a finalist for the Broyles Award, honoring the nation's top assistant coach. He was hired as UAB's fourth head football coach on December 4, 2011.

McGee and his wife, Tiffany, have two sons, Cameron and Grant.
