Dr Janet S. Awtrey was a former president of the Alabama Nurses Association.

She earned her master of science in nursing in 1968 and her doctor of science in nursing in 1980, both from UAB.

Awtrey was dean and nurse educator at the Capstone College of Nursing at the University of Alabama and a former faculty member at UAB. In 2007 she was inducted into Capstone's Alabama Nursing Hall of Fame. Capstone's "Janet S. Awtrey Distinguished Nursing Leader Award" was named in her honor.
