Jeremy Brown
Jeremy Scott Brown (born October 25, 1979 in Birmingham) is a professional baseball player. Brown graduated from Hueytown High School in 1998. He currently plays catcher for the Oakland Athletics.
2002 Draft
He was drafted in the first round of the 2002 amatuer draft by the A's after playing at the University of Alabama, where he was an all-SEC catcher in 2001 and led NCAA Division I in 2002 with 69 walks in 66 games. Brown was drafted in the in the 19th round of the 2001 amateur draft by the Boston Red Sox, but he did not sign. In 2004, Brown was featured in the best-selling book Moneyball which depicts the practices of Athletic's manager Billy Beane. In the book, Brown is labelled the "fat catcher" because Beane and his scouts argued about whether Brown was in good enough shape to be a first-round draft pick.
Current Status
Brown was named the 2005 playoff MVP of the Texas League while playing for the Double-A Oakland minor league affiliate, the Midland Rockhounds. He started 2006 at Triple-A Sacremento, and was called up to the Oakland Athletics on September 5. He played a total of 5 games with the Athletics, and is listed on their roster for 2007.
