KIA 580 is the FCC Callsign for the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, along with the later callsign KNIH 899. Formerly controlled from the first floor of Birmingham City Hall, the station is currently controlled from Fire Alarm at Birmingham Fire Station Number 6. All fire communications are handled through here. Fire Dispatch and other channels were until recently hosted on the Jefferson County trunking system, but is now hosted on the statewide Alabama Interoperability Radio System. The licenses for these callsigns are maintained by the city for backup communications.
