Lawrence Cooper was city attorney for Birmingham from his appointment by Mayor Larry Langford in December 2007 until Langford fired him in June 2009. He had previously served as chief assistant city attorney under Bernard Kincaid.
Cooper was president of the Magic City Bar Association in 2001.
Cooper's office had been criticized for being slow to apply to the Department of Justice for approval of a change in the date of the 2009 Birmingham City Council election, which was required in order to comply with federal law.
